Lumbini, the place where the Buddha was born in 623 BC,
is situated in the Terai plains of southern Nepal. The
nativity site is marked by a stone pillar erected by Indian
Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC.Listed as a world heritage site by
UNESCO; Lumbini is being developed with international
support as the supreme Buddhist pilgrimage and a symbol of
world peace. The sacred garden where the Buddha was born
converges on the Ashoka Pillar which carries an inscription
identifying the spot as the birthplace. To one side of the
pillar is the newly renovated Mayadevi.Temple which houses a
bas relief depicting the nativity? The puskarni pond, where
Queen Mayadevi – the deity’s mother – had taken a bath
before giving birth to him, lies nearby.

Climate:
Lumbini (elevation 100 m) has a tropical monsoon climate
characterized by a cold season, hot season, monsoon and
transitional periods. The core of the cold season extends
from the beginning of December to the end of January with
temperature occasionally dropping to +60c. The climate of
Lumbini is mostly pleasant throughout the year but the best
period to travel Lumbini is from September end to mid-March
PLACES TO VISIT
Sacred Garden
The Sacred Garden was the place where prince Siddhartha was
born. The Garden has an Ashokan pillar which carries an
inscription identifying the spot as the birthplace of
Buddha.

Mayadevi Temple
The Mayadevi temple consists of two panels that portray the
holy birth of the Lord. These were installed by Malla Kings
of the Naga dynasty who ruled the Karnali area of Nepal from
11th to 15th century. It is believed that this temple was
built over one of the original stupas constructed by Ashoka.
This temple is devoted to Maya Devi, the mother of Lord
Buddha. It was discovered by German archaeologist in the
year 1895.

Puskarni
Nearby the sacred temple of Mayadevi lies the tank where it
was believed that Queen Mahamaya took a bath prior to her
delivery. The waters of this place were used to cleanse the
new born baby Sidhartha..

Sanctum-Sanctorum of the Birthplace
The single most stoneslab sanctum located deep in the
sanctorum is of vital importance to the Buddhist. Revealed
after a meticulous excavation under the layers of ruins over
the site of the famous Maya Devi temple, the stone slab
points towards the location of the original place marking it
the exact spot of the birthplace of the Lord Buddha.

Maha Bodhi Temple
The temple is known for its 1700 years old idol. The idol
sits facing the place where Lord Buddha achieved
enlightenment.

Kushinagar
It is said that Kushinagar was the place where Lord Buddha
attained nirvana. The place has numbers of stupas, vihars
and chaityas that reminds us of the mahaparinirvana.
